FAQ
What compression ratio is right for me?
AAM Competition offers both 9.0:1 and 11.0:1 compression options for many of our VQ37 Engine Build Packages. 9.0:1 is a lower compression ratio than that of the factory-spec engine, making it ideal for forced induction applications, such as supercharger, turbo, and twin turbo setups. 11.0:1 is a higher compression ratio than the factory-spec engine, making it a great option for naturally aspirated builds looking to make more power and/or take advantage of higher octane fuels.
What is a “core charge”?
A core charge is an expense that is added if the customer does not wish to send in core units (engine block and/or heads) to be built, or the returned core units are not complete or are not in rebuild-able condition. In order to be eligible for a refund we must receive your core(s) within 30 days of when your AAM Competition product shipped to you. All cores will be thoroughly checked and tested upon arrival at our facility to determine their condition. The amount of your refund will be determined based on the condition of the core and is at the sole discretion of AAM Competition, LLC. See AAM Competition’s Terms and Conditions page for more information.
What’s the expected turn-around time for a VQ37 engine package?
Turn-around time depends on many things, including the specific stage/level of your desired engine package and availability of components. Upon receiving useable cores, AAM Competition is able to complete most engine packages within 3 – 6 weeks, but this timeframe is not a guarantee and may vary. Our current workload will also play a role in determining a timeline for project completion.
Can an engine package be built without using my core components?
Yes! AAM Competition is able to put together an entire motor using a new OEM block and/or OEM heads at your request. Although this option is more expensive and will require you to pay the associated new block/head charges, it will allow AAM Competition to build you a new motor without having to send any components to us to be re-used. Please contact us to find out more information regarding the availability and expected order times of OEM engine components.
What is a "Shortblock" and what is a “Longblock”?
A Shortblock is the lower portion of the engine, the "block", which houses the crankshaft, rods and engine pistons. A Longblock is the Shortblock with the cylinder heads attached to the short block - the cylinder heads are bolted and professionally torqued with a head gasket and head studs to the shortblock. The Longblock does not include the installation of the timing assembly (ie. timing chain, tensioners, etc.), pulleys, and other engine accessories such as the intake manifold. For an additional charge we can "complete" the Longblock with the timing assembly and any other accessories requested for an additional charge. It is recommended to replace the timing assembly when rebuilding an engine.
How is the power rating established for the different engine stages?
The power ratings (whp and engine hp) are general guidelines of the maximum power the engine may be able to support and varies considerably depending on the quality of other components utilized in the vehicle’s overall build. This includes the quality and reliability of the vehicles fuel system, engine management, tuning, octane/quality of fuel, etc. which all play a significant role in the vehicle’s ability to support up to the maximum power rating.
Where can I find details about the limited engine machining defect warranty?
Please see AAM Competition’s Terms and Conditions page.
